…years ago he was a member of a brass band, and for some year past has acted as band master to several, notably the Volenteer and the Loco. Brass Bands. He was also a member of the orchestra of tho old Philharmonic Society, and of all the various musical societies since that time, first as cornetist and of late years as a player of the contra-bass. It is not many months since the West Torrens Band was inaugurated, but good progress has been made, and the band will miss bis services. Mr. Bermingham goes to Broken Hill on Friday next. …carried off the Southcombe Challenge Cup at the A.N.A. Competitions, at which it won first prizes in 1903, 1904, 1905, and 1907. Tho band won the B grade competition at Ballarat in 1907, and came third in tho A grade contest. On the last occasion on which the band went away it won the cham- pion march at Ballarat and St. Kilda. Mr. Stead, on that occasion, gave the band the absolute possible for music. The fact that the members of the City Band have won over 100 medals at competitions speaks volumes for the excellence of Mr. Bermingham's tuition. BERMINGHAM - The death is reported from Adelaide of Mr. John Joseph Bermingham, for merly of Mica street, Broken Hill, at the age of 72 years. The late Mr. Bermingham during his many years residence in Broken Hill was closely connected with local bands, and at different periods was conductor of the City and Broken Hill bands. Like the late Mr. Bermingham, his sons were all musical, and the family was frequently referred to as the "Musical Berminghams". …from the conductorsbip of the Broken Hill Band Mr. Alf. Bermingham acted as conductor until his departure from Broken Hill. Another son, Mr. A. Bermingham, is at present con- ductor of the W.l.U Band. The late Mr. Bermingham conducted a. boot- making business in Broken Hill for many years until his failing health forced him to give it up. He later removed to Adelaide. The deceased leaves a widow and family of two daughters and nine sons. They are Mrs. A. French (Sydney), Mrs. R. Richardson (Melbourne), and Messrs.
