ROADS v. RAILWAYS State's Biggest Monopoly Its Loosening Its Grip

5 August 1946, The Courier-Mail (Brisbane, Qld. : 1933 - 1954), page 2

…Excuse my ignorance but what was the purpose of these tenders and permits? - GeoffreyHansen Hi Geoffrey, governments protected their investments in the railways by restricting competition from the road transport companies by allowing road transport [passenger and freight] operations by permit only and that was with a high fee and very limited number of permits. See the following 1946 article for some background to this; The Courier-Mail Monday 5 August 1946 P.2 ROADS v. RAILWAYS State's Biggest Monopoly Is Loosening Its Grip by H. …West Burleigh and [Benowa ] Molendinar. The colour is also interesting as West Burleigh is in red but Molendinar and Oxenford are in the original dark blue. The name Yatala on the Stapylton site is also in blue not red.   WP&S Yatala 1A and Stapylton 2 show the original planned route and the different as built route which suggests the WP&S predate construction as does the Oxenford “site for future station”. The name change from Southport Jnt to Ernest Jnt was reported in the Government Gazette as noted in Morning Bulletin (Rockhampton) 5APRIL1890 P. 5.
